The Shaft Volunteer Fire Department has proudly served the citizens of Allegany County for the past 72 years. Situated in Western Maryland just south of Frostburg in the Georges Creek Valley, Shaft (formerly Borden Shaft) is an unincorporated community. It lies at an elevation of 1,900 feet. The Shaft Volunteer Fire department has a primary response area of over 16 square miles, and automatic mutual-aid agreements with 10 different departments in an additional 20 square mile area. Our department is one of the most highly trained and progressive fire departments in the Allegany County. Our firefighters provide fire suppression and emergency medical first-responder aid to the unincorporated communities of Carlos, Gramtown, Klondike, Midlothian, National, Shaft, Woodland, and Wrights Crossing; along with providing automatic first alarm engine assignments to the residents of Frostburg and the students of Frostburg State University.
